Emergency Services Mountain Bike Championships 2017
Six PSSA members attended North Wales on the 1st of October for this years Emergency Services XC Championships hosted by the Fire Service. The PSSA team consisted of Stephen Corbyn in the 30-39 age group, Garry Hurst, David Cory & Jamie Rees 40-49 age group, Joe Aggett 50-59 age group and Jane (lip stick) Kenny in the ladies.
This was PSSA cycling's largest ever team in an Emergency Services race and the team was positive for a good result. The forecast was not great with weather warnings for heavy rain but this seemed to stay away. The course was wet and muddy and consisted of fire track road & single track. At 1130 the race started with a neutral start up the first climb. Then at the top all hell broke loose and the race really started. It wasn’t long until the race split up but PSSA riders were right up there at the front of the race. As the lead riders finished their first laps Garry & Steve were in the chasing pack sitting in 4th & 6th place. Jamie Rees was not far behind in around 12th. As the race continued PSSA riders battled it out against the best the Fire and Police had to offer. Jamie Rees had a crash on lap three and from what others say it was quite an impressive crash into a cold river but this didn’t stop him and before the water even covered him he was out, back on the bike and riding again.
At the finish line it was great to see the bright red and white jerseys of the prison service appear in the front group & beating the Fire & Police service who had much bigger teams. As the team riders crossed the line it was clear to see the effort they put in. However Jane found energy to make sure she could apply her lip stick for the ride back to the car park. In the end it was clear that PSSA cycling was the strongest team with 3 riders finishing in the top 10 overall, 2 age group podium spots and 3 top 10's in age groups. Considering how outnumbered PSSA cycling was they battled hard and got some fantastic results.
