FAQs

Q: How long has the Prison Service been involved?

A: The Prison Service first entered the games in 1995 in Melbourne, Australia and approximately 125 members and their families attended.

The games were such a success that at the next games in Calgary, Canada we had over 300 members of staff and their families attend.

The games in Stockholm Sweden in 1999 were not as well supported, as the general feeling was that the cost of the trip and the cost of living in Stockholm was too expensive.

2001 saw the team back up to full strength for the trip to Indianapolis in the United States of America.

2003 saw our most successful medal total in Barcelona, Spain.

2005 a squad of over 250 attended the Quebec games

2007 saw around 200 travel to Australia for the games in Adelaide

Q: What is the standard of competition like?

A: The standard of competitor varies greatly; at the games in Indianapolis I was speaking to a retired LA Police officer who had competed in all of the WPFG since they started in San Jose, California in 1985. At 72 years of age he had won 7 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals whilst in Indianapolis. Needless to say the standard wasn't brilliant but the camaraderie and atmosphere was enough to make the gentleman want to return year after year to catch up with old friends.

It is fair to say however, that some of the times and scores that are recorded are of a very good international standard. The men's indoor pairs rowing event was won by two athletes who had represented Greece in the Sydney Olympics.

Q: How do I find out more information about the games?

A: You can contact Tracie Mapletoft ~ PSSA Co-ordinator at Newbold Revel on 01788 804171, or Julie Allen at the Staff Fitness Team on 07772 560472 or visit the World Police & Fire Games web page on www.2009wpfg.ca

Q: Will I get any help with finance?

A: The WPFG's committee has a budget set aside for giving subsidy to serving or retired members of the prison service who are paying members of the PSSA. The amount of subsidy will be up to a maximum per person to be confirmed. However, if the number of people wanting to attend exceeds our estimated numbers the subsidy will be divided equally.

Q: How do I qualify for subsidy to attend the 2009 games in Vancouver?

A: To qualify for any subsidy you must stay at the chosen team hotel for the duration of the games and take the flights arranged by the PSSA HQ.
No subsidy will be given for competitors who wish to make their own accommodation arrangements whilst in Vancouver.
You must also be a member of the PSSA and be a registered competitor or official to receive subsidy

Q: Does the package include travel to and from Vancouver?

A: Yes, the package includes flights, transfers, insurance and hotel accommodation.

Q: Can we get advice or help about getting to Vancouver independently?

A: Yes, we have a recommended travel agent who would be only too happy to offer assistance in travelling to Vancouver

Q: What sports are available at the games?

A: A full list of sports is available at the Games web page at the Games Website

Q: Do we have a chosen hotel yet?

A: We are currently finalising arrangements and details will be available shortly.

Q: Have any arrangements been made for social events for the PSSA team whilst in Vancouver?

A: The PSSA have always organised a number of social events specifically for the PSSA team and the Games organisers have also arranged a wide range of events for all competitors.
