WPFG Introduction
The World Police & Fire Games (WPFG) is the result of a long tradition
of California Police Olympics, which were created in 1967. A high
level of interest on the part of the participating athletes for
this type of sporting event prompted the Federation, whose headquarters
are located in San Diego California, to create the international
WPFG in 1985. A non-profit organisation, the Federation (WPFGF)
is led by a steering committee made up of active and retired members
of various police and fire departments in the U.S., Canada, Europe
and Australia.
The first World Police and Fire Games were held in San José, California
in 1985.
Subsequently, the Games have been held or will be held in:
1987 San Diego, California, USA
1989 Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
1991 Memphis, Tennessee, USA
1993 Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA
1995 Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
1997 Calgary, Alberta, Canada
1999 Stockholm, Sweden
2001 Indianapolis, Indiana, USA
2003 Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain
2005 Québec, Québec, Canada
2007 Adelaide, Australia
2009 Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
These biennial games are open to active or retired members of the
public safety community. This includes police officers, fire fighters,
corrections officers and customs officials. Each host city prepares
high level, international competition programs offering a wide variety
of sports and categories comparable to those of the Summer Olympics.
