Barcelona World Police & Fire Games 2003

It was like a scene from Baywatch, Mediterranean style - sun, sea, sand and sex on the beach cocktails. The only trouble was nine of the Services finest were too busy hurtling about in the 35 C of heat to fully appreciate it!!

The swim was unusual in that wetsuits were banned! Not something we are used to in Britain but something which I personally enjoyed, except when I spotted a couple of big Jelly Fish, one of the downsides of 25 C water temperature.

Out of the water, up a slip way and onto the bike for a three lap, flat closed road course which was a delight except for a couple of groups of draughters (upholders of law and justice!). The heat was not a problem on the velo but as you progressed on the run along the seafront that drastically changed, no shade and not nearly enough fluids on a very long three laps (well it seemed like it!).

Credit to Tony Walker who at the finishh insisted it was only a two lap run, then realised I was not joking and promptly turned around and went back out.

A welcome aboard to Cliff Hogg who only discovered PSDT club in Barcelona, which boasted our turnout to nine! A great effort considering how long the club has been active.

Unfortunately we didn't secure a medal, Ian Birch narrowly missed out with a 4th in his age group but considering the large field of 350 and an excellent winning time of 1:57, medals are certainly hard to ping at the WPFG
